Yuki Tsunoda's Sao Paulo Grand Prix: A Weekend to Forget
Yuki Tsunoda's weekend at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix was a challenging one, to say the least. After a series of unfortunate events, he found himself at the bottom of the classified finishers, finishing in 17th place. It was a stark contrast to the performance he had hoped for, and he admitted, 'nothing worked' during this 'one of the worst weekends' for Red Bull.
The troubles began early on when Tsunoda made contact with Lance Stroll, resulting in a 10-second penalty. Adding to the woes, he failed to serve this penalty correctly, earning him an additional 10-second sanction. These penalties significantly impacted his race, as he crossed the finish line last among the classified finishers.
Tsunoda's frustration was evident as he stated, 'It’s just a shame. Literally, nothing worked this weekend. When something works, something didn’t work at the same time.' He struggled with overall grip, which seemed to be the root cause of his issues.
When asked about the contact with Stroll, Tsunoda said, 'I don’t know. It’s a shame about the contact. I didn’t notice that I even had contact, so I’m sorry for him. That’s it.'
The future of Tsunoda's contract with Red Bull is uncertain, with rumors suggesting that Isack Hadjar might be promoted. Despite the challenging weekend, Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies tried to find a silver lining, acknowledging that Tsunoda's last stint in clean air was strong, and without the penalties, he could have been in a decent fight for points.
Despite the setbacks, Mekies concluded, 'But again, it's the same thing, would and should don't win races, so we can only pocket the last strong stint in clean air that he has done.'
