Plastic waste: it's a problem we all face, and one Cornish dairy is tackling head-on! Ehrmann Cornish Dairy, the company behind the beloved Trewithen brand, is making a significant shift away from traditional plastic bottles. They're replacing them with beverage cartons for three of their fresh cream products. This move isn't just about reducing waste; it's a statement.
Partnering with Elopak, the dairy has installed a new filling line for Pure-Pak® cartons at its Glynn Valley site. This is part of a larger investment following their recent acquisition by the Ehrmann Group.
So, what products are getting the carton treatment? You can find fresh Cornish whipping cream, double cream, and buttermilk in 300ml, 500ml, and 1000ml Pure-Pak® cartons this autumn. This strategic decision has already paid off, securing Trewithen listings in Tesco supermarkets across the UK. Talk about a win for a local favorite!
But here's where it gets interesting: the acquisition by Ehrmann is fueling these sustainability efforts. Ehrmann, a family-owned company with over a century of dairy innovation under its belt, acquired Trewithen. This move is providing a launchpad for their branded desserts into the British market. The ongoing investment in the Cornish facility, slated to be completed by 2026, is a clear indication of their commitment to green initiatives.
Mark Moody, Marketing Director for Trewithen Dairy and Ehrmann UK, explains, “We are continually reviewing our packaging usage, reducing waste, and reviewing all types of packaging.” They've set ambitious goals in their five-year strategy, including reducing waste and energy consumption. This involves training their employees and aligning the company culture with their sustainability goals.
And this is the part most people miss: Moody also acknowledges the challenges of changing consumer habits.
