A Cultural Tribute: At the newly opened Cnergy petrol kiosk in Katong, a vibrant mural celebrates the area's Peranakan heritage. This station, located on Dunman Road, plans to transform a corner into a culinary haven, offering small food stalls serving Peranakan cuisine by early next year. Union Gas Holdings, the owner of Cnergy, entered the petrol station business in 2009 and aims to seamlessly integrate its stations into the community fabric.
Community-Centric Approach: Teo Hark Piang, CEO of Union Gas Holdings, emphasizes that their stations aim to cater to the community's needs. "It's about providing services beyond just fueling cars. At our Katong station, we focus on food and beverages, attracting walk-in customers and residents looking for a quick bite," he explains. This strategy aligns with the growing trend of EV drivers spending more time at service stations while their vehicles charge.
Charging Ahead: Each Cnergy station is equipped with four EV fast chargers, and the company plans to expand with two more stations by 2026 and 2027. These chargers can typically bring an EV battery to 80% in just 30 minutes, catering to the rising demand for EVs, which accounted for 40% of new car registrations in the first half of 2025.
Reimagining the Pit Stop: Shell's Telok Blangah outlet takes a unique approach by offering a compact gym pod for customers to exercise while their vehicles charge. Shell has installed EV chargers at over half of its stations and plans to add more, recognizing the changing needs of EV drivers. Shell's general manager, Mr. Doong Shiwen, highlights the importance of providing diverse options, from drive-throughs to pop-up concepts, to keep customers engaged.
Supporting Local Businesses: Pop-up initiatives, like the National Day ice cream carts, not only bring excitement to the stations but also support local enterprises. As petrol stations evolve, they become potential community spaces, adapting to the gradual shift towards EVs.
The Future of Petrol Stations: With fuel sales declining due to more efficient vehicles, operators are diversifying their revenue streams. Associate Professor Walter Theseira suggests that petrol stations, often located in prime residential areas, have the potential to be repurposed for community use. However, converting them into pure EV charging stations may not be practical for Singapore, as drivers prefer charging their EVs at shopping centers or while running errands.
